A New Look

If you haven’t been here in a while, or if your browser isn’t hiding things from you behind a cache, you’ll see a fresh new look to the site. I’ve been fiddling with this for a while, but held off on rolling it out until today in celebration of my birthday.

The site is still an 800-pixel fixed width, centered, two column design, but with a new fixed-position top-level navigation bar, brighter colors, and a much cleaner Mars image up top. Overall the layout just seems more succinct and crisp to me.

I’ve completely given up trying to get the site to render properly in Internet Explorer, and things look a bit askew if you’re using Opera. If you’re using Safari or Firefox (especially on the Mac with it’s ability to render the website title in the gorgeous Zapfino), you’ll see the site as it’s intended.

Besides the much cleaner site header, some of the top-level navigational tabs have been removed, and the front-page weblog navigation links in the right column have been replaced by much smaller drop-down menus. (If you’re using a browser with no javascript support, please bear with me as these won’t work for you just yet.)

Not all of the pages on the site have been refreshed yet, but they’ll be following in the days to come. If you’ve got comments on the new look, or if you think something about the new design is broken, I’d love to hear from you in the comments section.

Comments

I do like the cleaned version of the site. I’ve always been in favor of minimal aesthetics and everything technical for me works well, since I’m using Firefox with Javascript support.

The drop-down menus are something I’m not sure about yet. My instinct is that I do not like them, but they might be something I just need to get used to. Personally, I like seeing who’s posted recently without having to click on anything, and I don’t need the menu to see Recent Posts as I can simply scroll down the page. I do think the drop-down menu works really well for the Archieves. “I love him! I hate him! I love him! I hate him!”
