Apple and Intel
Well, that was shocking.
At its Worldwide Developer Conference today, Apple® announced plans to deliver models of its Macintosh® computers using Intel® microprocessors by this time next year, and to transition all of its Macs to using Intel microprocessors by the end of 2007.
I really didn’t see it coming. I can’t imagine hardware sales are going to be at all good in the intervening time before the Intel-based macs are shipping.
I don’t think this’ll be that big a deal. I’m a tad annoyed that my brand new computer is now deprecated, but assuming developers keep producing fat binaries, it should be a stable platform for some time to come.

Yeah, Cnet and WSJ had it over the weekend, but there was tremendous doubt as to whether they had the whole story.
The software will almost certinaly keep working for quite some time (with fat binaries that will run on both PPC and Intel). I’m not sure I’d buy a dual G5 now unless the prices dropped (which they might given the end-of-lining). But if the Cnat and WSJ reports got it right, the high-end of the Apple line will be the last to transition, so you’ve got a couple of years before a dual-G5 replacement would come along.

I saw it on CNET Friday.. I don’t understand, but it does stop my plans of getting a dual G5 with my educational discount. I have to wonder how long all my software will continue to be current.
I don’t know.. suggestions are welcome.. buy now or just keep truckin along with Edward?
