Blogging and Movable Type

Over on my, until now unlinked, links page, I’m moving my b-links (which until now have been showing up as a sidebar on my blog) into Movable Type. I had tried this a while back, but never to my liking. However, Gary’s new Link Farm (with tasty RSS feed) got me interested in the idea again, and I think I’m finally at a point of enough comfort with MT to be able to customize it to my liking (yet to happen).

Of course, on the flip side of the PersonalProxy idea is the ever-elusive utility of server-push. On this note, I’ve been playing around with the MT code to add AIM pings for user comments. Right now, I think I’ve got it working so that you can get a ping whenever a comment is posted to an entry that you have commented on. Next I hope to implement threading in the comments, allowing pings only for responses to your thread. (As I write this, I wonder if that really makes sense. The posts are more like threads…). Also, adding the ability to subscribe to the blog, recieving a ping whenever a new post is made, would be nice.

As an aside, hacking on the MT code got me thinking, and it occured to me that I had written a minature blog back on my Sparc-1 (the original host holding the name kasei) at Cnation, circa 1997. It’s funny - I had never really used it much (mostly to give status reports on the host and it’s one mailing list), and had forgotten about it until just now. Too bad I didn’t get into it at the time, as I would have liked to have a record of the things I read, and browsed, and thought, and felt. Oh well <g>
