This is a good state of GStreamer article. GStreamer has a great architecture (one that had a major influence on my design of the Surface Reconstruction), and it sounds like they've made some great progress in the last few years.
GStreamer - Where We Are and Where We Are Going:As part of our desktop push we got GStreamer integrated into GNOME 2.2 and recently moved GStreamer CVS and website to be hosted on freedesktop.org. While the move has little practical effect we hope its sends out a clear message to developers that we see GStreamer not as the GNOME multimedia framework but as the Unix multimedia framework.
