This is a nice solution to the problem. I've been hacking away at Movabletype to do something similar (subscribe to a specific post's comments), but MT lacks some crucial hooks for that.
Comment Replies:When I post to blogs like mine I’m interested to see if the owner, or anyone else, replies to my comment … So, my experimental solution is this: when you post a comment on this site you’re presented with a checkbox asking if you’d like to ‘Let future posters alert you of their replies.’
