Speaking of searching photos based on semantic value and depiction, Seth Nickell has a short quip about parsing natural language image queries, and why annotation needs to be automatic.

Parsing “Find family photos taken in October”:

Everything is easy except figuring out what the devil “family photos” (compound noun) means. We’ll get the photos part… but how do we tell what’s family and what’s not?
