New Phone

Just a few days short of two years after getting my T68i, and about a month after losing (stolen?) it in Ireland, I am now the proud owner of a slick K700i.

I’ve been having some troubles getting GPRS to work on it, but since I plan on switching carriers immediately upon my return to the East on Tuesday, I think I can wait and see if it works after the switch. This phone seems to lack anything even remotely resembling a “ring” ring, but it can blast mp3s out of it’s tiny little speaker. (So, I need to record a phone ringing, and turn it into an mp3.) Lots of other cool features, too. But I’ve only had it for about 24 hours now, and I’ve yet to really dig into it.

Kudos to UPS who were able to predict the delivery time, a full day in advance of the actual delivery, to within three minutes; It was delivered three minutes early. That’s pretty incredible.

You know, I’ve got what I consider to be a pretty nice phone and that thing makes me feel very inadequate now.

However the site for your phone is pretty swank and considering I’m sitting 3 hours a week in a class where we are trying to design business plans for m-commerce (ick ick ick!), it is nice to see that the phone companies are trying to give us a sufficient amount of shit (excuse me, bells and whistles) to work with.

But as usual, am jealous of your toys.

Funny, I would have said the site for the phone sucks ass. All the flash is a huge pain in the ass. And the fact that I have to click the tiny “K700i Product Homepage” link at the bottom of the page to get to something remotely navigable, still with too much flash on it, is annoying.

Look, it’s a flashy site, it does kinda pretty stuff when you click/roll over stuff. That’s what I meant by swank.

As far as usability, yes the flash presentation is huge you have to love to wait for things to load fully or move or whatever. Still, the navigation is pretty second-nature, you don’t sit there trying to figure out what the links mean or think too hard if something’s clickable.

General point being, I wasn’t confused by the site and it looked pretty. As much as I hate “Don’t make me think,” I have to say, the site didnt make me think.. just wait. And wait.

As for the product page, yeah that’s kinda weird. There’s global nav and then theres.. what would you call that, semi-global navigation? Anyway, other than slow you down a bit, what did Flash ever do to you to deserve such scorn? :P

It makes me wait, wastes bandwidth, wastes CPU time, requires a plugin, prevents indexing by most search engines, and breaks accessibility.

You know, just because you have a snappy retort and a good point, does that really mean you have to.. ya know.. write it down and make me look silly?

to throw in my 2 cents here, the flash menus don’t even work for me once i click on the phone (on the left of the intro). and this is probably the first flash i’ve seen actually break on my browser.
