FOAF People

January 18th, 2004 9:16 PM

I promised I’d do it, and Gary and Lauren being out of town gave me the free time in which to start generating a page of people I know. It’s not linked from any site navigation yet, though, so consider it experimental at this point.

The file is being generated from my FOAF file and the about.xrdf photo annotation files, with Xalan, XMLStarlet, Perl, and a lot of pipes.

It’s all rather minimal at the moment, but it works. The pages show names, depictions, pictures, and links to personal websites and weblogs (when available). Only one depiction image is shown, while all image depicts are shown; Edge direction is important here. Some people have very little of this data … I’ll have to seek them out and take more pictures. And annotate more.

Things that aren’t displayed, of course, are email addresses and chat (AIM/ICQ/Jabber/etc.) names. Any suggestions on pulling in more data while respecting people’s privacy are welcome.

I hope to get the code extracting relationship, school (and maybe workplace), and geo-contact data from my FOAF file.

The next step is getting my photo album generation code using this data to provide links from the album pages to the people (and things, via Wordnet) who appear in the photos.

Also nice would be getting MTCommentIcon to use this data in some way. Although requiring XMLStarlet and Xalan to work might be pushing it a bit… I’ll probably have to figure out how to make it optional.

Update: Xalan seems to like sorting my name below everyone else’s. I’m not quite sure why this is.

I should give you a thorough tongue-lashing for having me listed as “Ben Boulanger”, but you’ve caught me after an excellent day of gaming. How fortunate for you.

Still, I must protest that those pictures make me look much drunker than I was.

I can change the name if you like, but I’m afraid there’s nothing I can do to make you look less drunk.

altho i have to scroll forever to get there, the alphabetical by first name listing places simon leen and stephen mathis right below me, where the hotness belongs. thanx greg ;]

but moreso, the fact that you’ll implement relationships such as “enemy of,” “antagonist of,” and “ambivilent of” warms me in my heart place.

The program is sorting your name last becuase it thinks you belong in last place. It’s mocking you, Greg Williams.

I can still come out to where you are and kick the ever-loving shit out of your computer if you’d like.

I dig it man, Big time!! I guess I’m gonna have to use all those pictures as my “Before” pictures (now that I’m running on that treadmill).
