I’m intrigued by our cultural understanding and construction of the spatial properties of media. Specifically, the phrase “see below” in the context of books or web pages where what is actually being referenced is on another page. True, it would be possible, in print form, to unbind a book and lay out the pages so as to make the reference technically correct, just as it would be (with slightly less coherence) possible to open two browser windows and stack them on top of each other.
Strange the way cling to our metaphors.

getting in on this a bit late, but just wanted to mention a book that i think you’d like (if i haven’t mentioned it already): metaphors we live by by george lakoff and mark johnson. it even has a chapter devoted to our use of spatial metaphors to describe many different aspects of our lives.
