Yahoo!

Oh dear. This may be enough to get me to start using Yahoo! again on a regular basis: Search Shortcuts.

Yeah, they’re still using the Google backend, but they’ve also added their own value to the search by leveraging their Yahoo! properties such as mapping, shopping, etc. It will be interesting to see what they do with the technology and data they acquired with Inktomi, though.

You’re right, the Yahoo! shortcuts totally rock. I’ve been using a similar thing in galeon with its smart bookmarks for a long time (surprised mozilla hasn’t picked this up yet): I type “google search text” in the location and it does a google search, “dict gregarious” and it looks up the meaning of gregarious, etc.
But just being able to use the new map and zip code shortcuts will probably triple my productivity… just like Homer learning he can type Y instead of Y-E-S :)
On a side note, it looks like Yahoo! is either still using Google on the backend or they completely ripped off every Google feature. It’ll be interesting to see if Yahoo! can make a better Google out of Google’s own data.
